How can we help?

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add my first collectible?
Tap the «+» button. The camera opens straight to capture so you can shoot the item. Kabynyt AI runs Identify on the photo and pre-fills the form before you tap save. You can also paste a title, scan a barcode, or type the details by hand.
How do I import a collection?
Settings → Import → pick Goodreads (books), Letterboxd (movies), or Discogs (vinyl), then pick the CSV file. Each format expects the exporter's stock columns — nothing to configure. Covers back-fill automatically.
Does barcode scanning need internet?
Yes — barcode scans hand the digits to Google Gemini for a deep lookup that returns title, manufacturer, year, and price range. Scanning still works offline, but you'll get the barcode digits only, not the title or cover.
Does AI photo identification need internet?
Yes — Kabynyt sends the photo to Google Gemini for identification. You can bring your own API key in Settings, or use the bundled service (free for 5 identifications, then $0.99/month).
How do I back up my collection?
iCloud sync is automatic when iCloud is enabled — every device signed into the same Apple ID stays in sync through your private CloudKit container. Settings → Backup & Restore also exports a JSON snapshot you can save anywhere.
Is Kabynyt free?
The app is free to download. All 48 categories, unlimited manual entry, photos, notes, CSV import, and iCloud sync are free forever. Kabynyt AI is free for 5 identifications, then $0.99 a month for unlimited use. Cancel anytime.
Can I search for digital media without a barcode?
Yes — tap Search by name and type a title. Kabynyt routes the search to the right catalog by category: iTunes for movies, TV, and magazines; Discogs and MusicBrainz for vinyl and music; Open Library for books and comics; Wikipedia for video games and the long tail. If the catalogs miss, an AI fallback runs to catch the rest. Pick a result and the form pre-fills.
Where do covers and metadata come from?
iTunes for movies/TV/music/podcasts, Open Library for books, MusicBrainz and Cover Art Archive for music, Discogs for vinyl, and Wikipedia for general entries. Only the title, identifier, or barcode is sent — never your collection.
How do filters and sorting work?
Filter by status (owned, wishlist, loaned, retired), photo presence, rating, or price; sort by date added, title, value, or rating. Filters apply across every category at once, or pin to one.
What's the difference between tags and subcategories?
A category is one of 48 types Kabynyt is built for (Books, Wine, LEGO, …). A subcategory is a smaller group you make inside a category (“Pokémon” inside Trading Cards). A tag is any label you want, free-form, used across categories.
How do wishlist and loans work?
Mark any item as wishlist instead of owned to track what you want. Lend something? Tap Loaned and log who has it — the home tab surfaces overdue loans so you remember to ask for them back.
I deleted something by accident
Settings → Recently Deleted. Items wait 30 days before they're purged. Tap an item to restore it to your collection exactly as it was.
How does Discogs sync work?
Settings → External Accounts → connect Discogs and sign in. Your records and wishlist then sync both ways — add or edit here or on Discogs and the change shows up in both. You choose what syncs, you can see each record's market value, and you can disconnect anytime; disconnecting leaves your Kabynyt collection untouched.
Can I add items from a web page?
Yes. In Safari or any app, tap Share and choose Kabynyt — it reads the page and imports the item, pulling the title, details, and a cover image from it. Review and edit everything before you save.
Getting Started
Open the + menu
The big «+» button in the tab bar opens five ways to add: camera, barcode, search, type, or import.
Capture or look it up
Shoot a photo for Kabynyt AI, scan a barcode, type a title for iTunes, or hand-enter what you know.
Review the pre-fill
Title, category, cover, year, and price come back filled in — tweak anything before you save.
Browse, sort, and filter
Open any category, mix filters and sorts, or jump to the home tab for For You Today and Recently Added.
Tips & Tricks
Bring your own API key
Settings → Kabynyt AI → paste your key. Bypass the 5-identification limit and pay the provider directly per request.
iTunes search beats typing
For movies, TV, music, and podcasts, search by title returns covers and metadata in one tap.
Use subcategories generously
“Pokémon” inside Trading Cards, “Hot Wheels” inside Toys — sub-buckets keep large categories navigable.
Run cover-art fetch after imports
CSV imports leave covers blank if the source didn't include them — the cover-art pass back-fills overnight.
Enable iCloud early
Turn on iCloud sync before you add hundreds of items, so the first sync is small and fast.
Use wishlist for hunts
Mark items as wishlist while browsing — the home tab surfaces wishlists you haven't acted on.
Try the first 5 identifications free, no sign-up. After that, $0.99 a month for unlimited Kabynyt AI. Cancel anytime.
Manage in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. Tap “Restore Purchases” in Kabynyt Settings to reactivate.
